Crochet is a big trend right now and I am HERE FOR IT!! If you are looking to add a little fun and interest to your wardrobe a crochet top or sweater is a great way to do it. Here I am sharing my 5 best outfit ideas for how you can style a crochet top with items you already own!
Here’s the great thing about crochet tops…
There are so many different styles, colors, and patterns but for the sake of this conversation, I’m going to hone in on my favorite – the open-knit long sleeve crochet top. It’s the most versatile making it the perfect addition to any closet – even the minimalist’s capsule wardrobe. It also is the most flattering on all different body types and works across all ages. You literally can see a toddler in one or your grandma and either way it would work!
The other great thing about a crochet top is it doesn’t lock you into one specific type of style. For example, you can style it with a boho flair, laid-back casual, polished, or even workwear appropriate. Also, since it pairs with so many different items, it makes for a great piece to add to your suitcase – you will get loads of mileage out of it!
How to Style a Crochet Top
1| over a swimsuit
I love the look of using a crochet top as a cover-up at the beach or poolside. You would want a loose-fit long sleeve top and then roll or scrunch the sleeves, or choose a loose-fitting short sleeve top. The point is to have a nice slouchy fit. On the way to the beach, you can pair it with denim shorts. When it cools off in the late afternoon and evening, throw it on with a long thin scarf tied around it to accent your waist. You could also use a belt but opt for an elasticized one that clips in one spot instead of the kind that you have to choose a belt hole and then be left with a tail. Much cleaner look.
2| with your favorite denim
This is probably the most obvious but it’s such a great spring and summer look. You can choose any wash denim and anything from no distressing to lots of distressing and it will look great! My personal favorite is pairing it with cutoffs or slightly distressed denim and sandals for a laid-back but chic look. As it heads into cooler weather, pair it with jeans and ankle booties.
3| with pull-on linen pants
This is such a great polished (yet comfy!!) look. The wide flowy fit of linen pants matches the effortlessness of the crochet top for a great combination. To keep from feeling like you are lost in your outfit, add a belt over the sweater or french tuck your sweater in. This means you tuck just the front middle bottom part of your top so that some material billows above the tuck. This adds dimension and shape to your whole look.
Pair this look with low heels and a clutch bag for the night, or flats and a structured bag for the day.
4| over a dress
A crochet sweater or top pairs so well with a dress. It’s a great way to turn your summery dresses into season transition pieces. A ribbed knit midi dress, floral maxi dress, or even a shorter girlie dress would all work great under a crochet top. The big thing is to add dimension and definition to your outfit.
You can do this with a belt or belt bag. Another idea is to gather a section of the sweater from the front (either center or off-center) and secure an elastic band around it, then tuck it under so that the little tail stays hidden. A third option is to wrap a belt around your waist UNDER the sweater but over the dress, then tuck the front center bottom of your sweater back underneath the belt. I used this last method in a reel, click here to watch!
5| for the office
A crochet top can be totally office appropriate, especially when paired with trousers and a blazer. You can pair it with either wide-leg or tapered-leg trousers and a blazer for a workwear look. If you wear a belt with your pants, you can also french tuck your top.
Another office look could be to pair it with tapered-leg trousers, a white button-down, and then the crochet top. Add the belt over the top if you feel like it needs some dimension.
So these are just a few of my favorite ideas for how to style a crochet top.

[…] This was such a fun surprise find – defanitely one of the best dresses at Target. I was expecting it to feel thin and very fitted like most dresses this style are. Instead, I found the ribbed fabric to be a really nice weight. The button henley tank style is so cute! I love that it is form fitting without being too tight at all. If anything I would say it runs a tad big. I can see this being a great everyday dress this summer. It also would be prefect to travel in – just layer with a denim jacket and pair with sneakers! I also styled this dress in this recent blog post. […]
